The site

As the aerial photograph above shows, the site sits between Princess Street and Whitehouse Street in Bedminster. It is currently occupied by industrial buildings, but was allocated for residential-led, mixed-use redevelopment by Bristol City Council as one of the key sites in the Whitehouse Street Regeneration Framework.

The Whitehouse Street regeneration seeks to create a thriving neighbourhood with new homes, better community and public spaces, sustainable travel routes and new job opportunities. The community was heavily involved in shaping the Whitehouse Street Regeneration Framework.

The actual Whitehouse Street regeneration area is mainly industrial, though – beyond the area – there are homes in most directions. To the south of the site is the railway track and, over the other side, Victoria Park and St Mary Redcliffe Primary School.

As the council’s plan for Whitehouse Street regeneration shows, the neighbouring sites are also identified for redevelopment. Working with council officers, we have been very careful to respect our nearest neighbours and align to the principles set out in the adopted Whitehouse Street Regeneration Framework.

Whitehouse Street Regeneration Framework

Excerpt from the Framework document:

“From the need for new homes, a changing employment landscape and the climate and ecological emergencies, Bristol faces multiple challenges as we plan for a better future. One of the urgent challenges is the need for homes of all types, especially affordable homes. While the city’s population grows, the area of land available to us does not. Central, sustainable locations like Whitehouse Street can provide the solution to this challenge. As previously developed land, building the new homes we need here means we can better protect greenspaces elsewhere in and around Bristol.”

Community Manifesto

As part of the Framework process Action Greater Bedminster oversaw a community consultation that was captured in a ‘Community Manifesto’. We have sought to deliver what the community has asked for in our proposal, as we set out on this website. This includes:

  • New affordable homes
  • Spaces for healthcare services and community uses
  • Highly sustainable buildings connected to the heat network
  • Extensive planting to encourage biodiversity
  • Dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes to promote safe, active travel
